Alt 1842m. This is the tenth park refuge that you will come to on the GR20 north when setting out from Calenzana. You drop down steeply off a high ridge that flanks the Monte Rotondo at 2622m, it's the second highest summit on the island. Petra Piana is particularly small and cosy! It was the first refuge to be built back in 1971. There are 28 beds inside and plenty of space for tents on grassy flat ground.
There is a cold shower, toilet block and a spring several metres from the main building. There is a very small indoor kitchen and small eating area, as well as, an outdoor kitchen. You can buy breakfast, a hot evening meal, snacks and drinks.
More information : eat on the GR20.
To enlarge on the eating space, the gardian has made an enclosed eating area on his terrace for those who order an evening meal. There is not much room in the refuge kitchen and things can get a bit fraught in the morning, if everyone needs to heat coffee at the same time to get away early.
